Im Jahre 1984 definierte die European Selective Paging Manufacturer's Association (kurz ESPA) die serielle Datenschnittstelle ESPA 4.4.4 zur Ansteuerung von Personenruf-Funkanlagen. Viele Hersteller von Rufanlagen, Paging-Anlagen und Alarmservern implementierten diese Schnittstelle, und so ist sie bis heute ein oft eingesetztes Standard-Interface insbesondere zur Realisierung von Pflege-/Notrufen an mobiles Pflegepersonal. In der jüngeren Vergangenheit haben sich jedoch die Anforderungen an die mobile Alarmierung stark verändert. So ergänzen oder ersetzen das TCP/IP-LAN proprietäre Verkabelungen, WLAN die DECT-Funktechnologie, VoIP das ISDN und multifunktionale Endgeräte einfache Telefone oder Pager. Zusätzlich werden Standorte mehr und mehr vernetzt und Dienstleistungen zentralisiert. Dies macht auch eine andere Art der Datenkopplung für die mobile Benachrichtigung und Alarmierung erforderlich. Daher arbeiten mehrere namhafte Hersteller von Rufanlagen, Logistik-Systemen und Alarmservern in einer offenen Interessengemeinschaft, unter der Federführung der Unify Software and Solutions GmbH & Co. KG (ehemals Siemens Enterprise Communications GmbH & Co. KG)
In 1984 the European Selective Paging Manufacturer's Association (ESPA for short) defined the serial data interface ESPA 4.4.4 for controlling paging radio systems. Many manufacturers of call systems, paging systems and alarm servers implemented this interface, and so it is still a standard interface that is often used, especially for the implementation of care / emergency calls to mobile care personnel. In the recent past, however, the requirements for mobile alarms have changed significantly. The TCP / IP-LAN complements or replaces proprietary cabling, WLAN the DECT radio technology, VoIP the ISDN and multifunctional end devices simple telephones or pagers.
